Warm days, inexpensive living and access to entertainment are a few of the elements that go into good retirement living. WalletHub, a personal financial website, has taken those characteristics and others into consideration to select the best states for retirement.

WalletHub’s ranking of the 50 states and the District of Columbia is based on 24 metrics that range from the adjusted cost of living to the number of museums and theaters, to public hospital rankings. Data was weighted based on importance, with affordability given the most weight.

Following in ascending order are the 10 top-ranked states: 

 

10. Virginia

Virginia may be for lovers but it is also for retirees with exceptional affordability and quality of life rankings.

 

9. Nevada

Nevada also comes in near the top for both affordability and quality of life, with low tax rates.

 

8. Montana

Montana has one of the highest percentages of the population over age 64. It is also in the top three for low taxes.

 

7. Texas

TTexas has a good affordability ranking at 9th and a high quality of life ranking.

 

6. Idaho

Idaho has one of the lowest property-crime rates, as well as one of the lowest adjusted costs of living.

 

5. Colorado


With its backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado has an exceptional quality of life ranking at 6th and good affordability and health care rankings.

 

4. South Carolina

Quality of life and health care rankings for South Carolina came in around the median, but it has a highly favorable affordability ranking of 6th.

 

3. South Dakota

South Dakota is one of the five states with the highest percentage of employed people over 64 and came in first for health care.

 

2. Wyoming

Wyoming is ranked one of the top four states for taxpayers and came in first for overall affordability.

 

1. Florida

The percentage of the population over age 64 is highest in Florida, and it ranks second for affordability and third for quality of life.
