Retirement plan participants in Montana and Wyoming saw the highest growth rates in their account balances of any states, according to Judy Diamond Associates, a provider of 401(k) research.

Plan participants in Montana saw an average growth rate of 16.27 percent in 2012 and in Wyoming it was 16.19 percent. Montana 401(k) participants averaged $82,358 per plan while Wyoming participants averaged $73,798.

The national average growth rate was 11 percent and most states clustered around 11 percent to 12 percent, Judy Diamond Associates says. The average balance was $79,997 in 2012.

Hawaii had the highest average account balance per participant in 2012 at $92,952.

North Dakota not only saw the least amount of growth year over year at 7.82 percent, but it also had the lowest average account balance per participant at $60,562.
