Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., a privately held financial institution based in New York City, has hired Chris Michel as head of diversity and inclusion for the firm, BBH announced Wednesday.

The move bolsters BBH’s diversity programs, BBH says. Michel will be in charge of attracting and retaining diverse talent. He also will be responsible for enhancing the BBH Affinity Network Communities, a group of nine employee-run networks that provide opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate in networking, mentoring, professional development and global collaboration.

Michel was most recently with American International Group, where he served as a senior director of diversity and inclusion.
