The CFP Board of Standards has introduced a "consumer protection" component to its annual grant program.

In 2009, according to the board, the organization's Financial Planning Grants program will consider proposals that support "rigorous standards in the interest of consumer protection and that [enable] CFP certificants to provide broader segments of the public with competent and ethical financial planning."

The program has awarded $1.45 million to 33 projects across the nation since it was founded in 2006.

Among the award recipients have been programs that use technology to broaden public access to financial planning and efforts to deliver financial planning assistance through libraries, schools and community-based organizations, according to the board.

Eligible projects must be new programs or proposals that further the CFP Board's mission.

Additional eligibility requirements are available on the CFP Board's Web site at www.CFP.net/teamup/grants.asp. Applications must be received at CFP Board by August 31.
