A Florida federal court has temporarily halted a telemarketer that stole millions from seniors by claiming to be part of Medicare, the Federal Trade Commission announced Thursday.

Following the court action September 18, the FTC said it is seeking to get restitution from the alleged victims of Sun Bright Ventures, Citadel ID Pro and their owner, Benjamin Todd Workman.

In its legal complaint, the FTC said the telemarketer’s workers told the consumers they needed their bank account numbers and other personal information to verify their identities.

Within a few weeks, $399 or $448 was taken out of the victims’ bank accounts for bogus Medicare benefit plans or identity theft protection, even though they had not agreed to purchase anything.

Many of the people contacted had their phone numbers on the FTC’s Do Not Call Registry.
