Spotlight - Ariel Fund Investor Class (ARGFX)

As we close out 2013, the leading equity scores in the Socially Responsible Fund Group belong to the Ariel Fund Investor Class (ARGFX) as well as the Ave Maria Growth (AVEGX).  Both of these funds are having a great year trading above the 5 score level and they offer you the best relative strength within the Socially Responsible genre. In addition, they also rank at the highest levels concerning any genre of mutual fund at this time.  The highest scoring Socially Responsible equity fund with low relative risk is the Parnassus Equity Income Fund (PRILX), which holds a score of 4.94 and a relative risk below the risk of the core equity market.  On the International scene, the Calvert International Equity Fund (CWVGX) holds a suitable score above the 3 level at a 3.11, and this fund can give you basic exposure to the Non-US side of your asset allocation.  The top sector fund is the Calvert Global Water Fund (CFWAX), which has a score of 3.79.  On the fixed income front, the Ave Maria Bond Fund (AVEFX) is shining as the leader in relative strength with a great score of 3.55.   Two newcomers to Quadrant 2 for fixed income are the Calvert Short Duration Income Fund (CSDAX) and the Calvert Ultra-Short Income Fund (CULAX), as both of these funds have improved against the backdrop of a downward trend in fixed income relative strength.

DWA Fund Score:    The DWA Fund score ranks the technical strength on a scale of 0 through 6 using an equation based on price trending and relative strength.  Funds with scores above 3 are considered by Dorsey Wright to be “investment grade”.   Funds with scores close to 6 are “market dominant."

DWA rRisk Score:     The DWA rRisk score measures the risk of the group on a relative basis. The calculation uses the 3 year Standard Deviation average of the group or fund divided by the Standard Deviation of the Cap Weighted S&P 500 Equity Index. Ratios higher than 1 demonstrate higher risk than the market benchmark and ratios less than 1 demonstrate lower risk than the market benchmark.
