Folio Investing has expanded its retail business with the acquisition of more than 20,000 customer accounts of the online investing service BUYandHOLD.

McLean, Va.-based Folio Investing is an online brokerage that offers self-directed investors the ability to trade securities in any dollar amount they choose. For example, investors can buy $50 worth of ABC Company, even if the stock trades at over $500 per share.

Each dollar-based investment portfolio, called folios, can have up to 100 stocks, ETFs or mutual funds. Or investors can choose from more than 160 pre-made ready-to-go folios, according to the firm.

BUYandHold was launched in 1999 and is a division of Edison, N.J.-based Freedom Investments. BUYandHOLD is an online investing service that promotes long-term equity investment strategies for individual self-directed investors focused on investing regularly through dollar-cost averaging, according to the firm’s web site.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
