Bankrate, a web-based financial information source, rated the top 10 states in which to retire. Some are in the Midwest and others are surrounded by mountains rather than on the beach, but each of them has a lower-than-average cost of living. Using data from Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and other sources, Bankrate ranked states by cost of living, quality of health care, taxes, crime and overall well-being.
Following are the top 10 in reverse order with the best listed last.

Midwestern Nebraska places particularly well on Healthways’ ranking, which includes positive feelings about the community, and social, financial and physical well-being.
