(Bloomberg News) Morgan Stanley Chief Executive Officer James Gorman said he told his staff not to circulate a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. employee's criticism of that firm's "toxic and destructive" environment.

Gorman, speaking at an event in New York hosted by Fortune magazine, said he doesn't understand why the New York Times would print an op-ed by a single Goldman Sachs employee, Greg Smith, who assailed the firm's top managers and treatment of clients in explaining his reasons for resigning.

"There by the grace of God go us," Gorman said.

Goldman Sachs has said it disagrees with Smith's assertions. The New York-based firm sent a memo to current and former employees, saying most of its workers believe it provides exceptional service to customers.
