John Kim has been elected vice chairman of New York Life, the firm announced today. Kim will continue as president of the firm’s Investments Group and also as chief investment officer of New York Life Insurance Co. In addition to his current responsibilities, Kim will now oversee the firm’s technology functions.

New York Life’s Investments Group has grown rapidly under Kim’s leadership, says the firm, more than doubling assets under management to approximately $400 billion in the five years since the financial crisis.

Kim also serves as a member of the firm’s executive management committee. He continues to report to Ted Mathas, chairman and CEO of New York Life.

Prior to joining New York Life in 2008, Kim served as president of Prudential Retirement and as president of CIGNA Retirement and Investment Services prior to that.  He also spent 17 years with Aetna Life & Casualty, where he rose to the position of president and CEO of Aeltus Investment Management as well as CIO of Aetna Life Insurance and Annuity Company.
