The respondents from both major parties shared their motivations for financial planning: saving enough to avoid having to work in retirement was named by 92 percent of both Republicans and Democrats. The vast majority of respondents also wanted to ensure that their families would be taken care of, a priority cited by 90 percent of Republicans and 87 percent of Democrats.

Whitman Insight Strategies surveyed 2,267 U.S. adults for the Lincoln study between March 22 and April 4, 2016.
