They are able to reduce portfolio risk because of their low to slightly negative correlation with equities and bonds. Global macro hedge funds trade fixed income, equity index futures, commodities, currencies and equities based on global macroeconomic events. A top-down approach is generally used to make trades and forecast the direction of currency, fixed income and equity indices. Although macro global funds are a small segment of the hedge fund universe, some managers have made billions by correctly anticipating a major world event.
