State and local taxes take a sizeable bite out of almost everyone’s budget, but for residents of some states the burden is much greater than it is for their neighbors.

People who live in states where state and local tax rates are high pay almost three times more than those residents in low-tax states, according to WalletHub, a personal finance website.

WalletHub looked at the annual state and local tax burden plus the cost of living to see where taxes had the most impact on residents' pocketbooks. Some states might have slightly lower taxes, but Wallet Hub found those taxes to be more painful because the state's cost of living is already so high.  Following are the 10 states where the burden is highest on residents, and the average state and local taxes paid.
