Tony Leal, chief technology officer of MoneyGuidePro parent PIEtech, has been named to the additional role as president of the Richmond, Va.-based manufacturer of financial planning software. He replaces Kevin Knull, who spent three-and-a-half-years at the company.

“Tony won’t give up his role as CTO,” PIEtech CEO Bob Curtis said of Leal. The two men have been partners for 25 years.

Leal’s new position will expand his role in charting the firm’s strategy with Curtis while continuing to direct its software development efforts. Leal is “the most knowledgeable tech person about data integration in the financial services industry. We couldn’t take a keyboard out of his hands if we tried,” Curtis said.

Curtis added that Leal’s role would be quite different than Knull’s was. Knull, who posted on LinkedIn that he had left PIEtech, had represented the software company in the public arena, while Leal has always been the chief development officer.

Knull previously held a number of C-level positions in the business. Before joining PIEtech, he was president of Symetra Services’ broker-dealer and head of its registered products units.
