The recession officially ended five years ago, and since 2009 the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans have captured 95 percent of the post-financial crisis growth, while overall income levels have declined for the bottom 90 percent of Americans, says WalletHub.

In fact, according to the Center for American Progress, the median American household is now earning less than it did in 1989 -- nearly a quarter of a century ago.

In contrast, the number of new millionaire households increased by 1.1 million to 7.1 million households in 2013, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

WalletHub ranked the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on income, GDP per capita and federal taxes paid per capita to identify the states with the highest and lowest net worth.

The following states are listed in descending order, with No. 1 being home to the poorest Americans.
