Life is a series of tough choices, Duran said, and the study results bear that out. “You can’t have it all,” he said.

United Capital has used the results of the study to reposition itself as a company that’s offers “financial life management,” Duran said.

That is more than a marketing slogan, he insisted. “It’s part of our DNA,” he said.

In practice that means United Capital clients provide an inventory of their goals and priorities. The company asks clients to select a few that are the most important and rate themselves periodically on how well they are reaching their goals.

Duran used his own case as an example. He and his wife Jen have a key goal of spending time with those they love. Duran gave a 10 on a scale of one to 10 recently on how well they were doing with this but his wife only said it was a 6. The result was they added more vacation time this summer to give themselves more time together, he said.
