Americans all face the same federal tax obligations, but when it comes to state and local taxes, there is a significant disparity between those who pay the highest and those who pay the lowest amount in taxes.

Taxpayers in the most expensive states spend nearly three times more to meet their civic burden than those in the least expensive states, according to the personal finance website WalletHub. The local and state tax rates affect the disposable income available to households.

WalletHub rated the 50 states and the District of Columbia to see where residents pay the least local and state taxes and then adjusted the ranking to compensate for the cost of living in each state. The rates go from $2,993 at the low end up to $7,719 in the most expensive.

The following are the 10 states where residents pay the lowest taxes, adjusted for the cost of living, along with the amount paid.
