Social Security benefits is a very large asset for most household retirement balance sheets. Different claiming strategies can result in substantially different lifetime outcomes, making the claiming decision an essential part of building a retirement income plan. This webcast reviews the issues surrounding the claiming decision, with regard to the debate about whether clients should claim Social Security early or late. We consider the long-term viability of Social Security and potential reforms, whether Social Security should be viewed as an investment or insurance problem, how likely it is for one to earn investment returns that can outstrip the benefits increases from delay, and tax implications such as Roth conversion opportunities.
