Ngo bonds with clients through her podcast, which she started a year ago, she said. She also teaches a three-part financial education workshop on the essential principles of financing, and she also does a Pets and Portraits event for her clients, hiring a photographer and offering clients photos with their pets, which they can then use as Christmas cards.
Smith explained that while she focuses mainly on women in transition, she tries not to miss out on opportunities to build her business. She does not turn down an invitation to an event because it does not fit her client base. “It’s all about relationships and being relatable… You have to go where the people are,’’ she said.
In response to a question from a recent high school graduate on marketing oneself to a prospective employer. Ngo said she researched different firms when she started out and sent about 200 emails to the decision makers at those firms. “All you need is one to respond,’’ she said.
“You want to look for companies that have opportunities for you,” Smith said, explaining that now is a good time to get into the business. “People are looking to bring on more minorities in the business, so I think there is a lot of opportunity out there. “
Smith explained that her years at Charles Schwab enabled her to make long-lasting connections. “You need a mentor to help you along,’’ she said.
