Since we’re in the thick of Lent, a religious observance in Christianity, and finished with Mardi Gras and Carnival, it seemed appropriate to present the top 10 least sinful states in the U.S. -- the top 10 do-gooders.

WalletHub went through various research and studies from government and non-government institutions to determine which U.S. states are the least tempted by the seven deadly sins: wrath (as demonstrated by crimes and maltreatment); envy (evinced by thefts); gluttony; greed (casinos and gambling); lust (teen birth rates and XXX entertainment sites); vanity (beauty salons and search queries for plastic surgery); and laziness (by the share of adults not exercising, volunteering or graduating from high school).

Mississippi has the lowest population of gambling disorders and fewer beauty salons per capita than most of the other U.S. states do, but it has the highest percentage of time spent on adult entertainment sites, demonstrating the sin of lust, which was a possible factor in why it didn’t make the top 10.

Here is the list of the 10 least sinful states in ascending order.

10. South Dakota

Although, South Dakota has quite a bit of a temper and problems with greed, the state is not big on jealousy, vices or vanity, and it has a fairly active community.

9. Nebraska

WalletHub ranked Nebraska, a state that gave America figures such as actor Marlon Brando and billionaire investor Warren Buffett, low in laziness, lust, anger and jealousy.

8. Idaho

Like South Dakota, Idaho has issues with anger and with hatred and greed, but the state that’s rich in world-famous potatoes handles jealousy, excesses, lust and vanity better than most states.

7. New Hampshire

Vices and greed are New Hampshire’s most committed sins, but its ability to handle anger, jealousy, laziness, lust and vanity better than most states has pushed it into the top 10.

6. Wyoming

Wyoming can take pride in keeping iniquities like lust and laziness lower than most states.

5. Iowa

Iowa has the lowest rating for excess and vices. WalletHub didn’t state which vices or excesses were not plaguing the state’s residents.

4. Utah

According to WalletHub, this state has the least excessive drinking behind Oklahoma and West Virginia.

3. Maine

Unlike Utah, Maine is one of America’s states with the most excessive drinking. But it has the fewest violent crimes per capita.

2. North Dakota

Idleness, jealousy and wrath are, comparatively, very low here. However, North Dakota is behind Wisconsin in having the most excessive drinking.

1. Vermont

Vermont is better than the rest of the U.S. when it comes to managing envy and lust. In fact, it has the second lowest time spent on adult entertainment sites.
