Last year, pandemic-fatigued Americans opened up their wallets and their hearts to the needs of their fellow man, but where they lived determined the degree to which they showed they cared.

In fact, some cities were significantly more generous than others, according to a 2021 study by WalletHub, the personal finance website.

For example, WalletHub found that cities like Tulsa, Memphis, Atlanta and Wichita gave the highest proportion of household income to charity, while cities like Honolulu, Sacramento and San Diego gave the lowest percentage of income to charity. Similarly, cities like Baltimore, Portland Ore., Milwaukee and Norfolk, Va. had the most volunteering hours per capita, while Jacksonville, Miami and Hialeah, Fla., Newark and Jersey City, N.J., and New York had the lowest rates of volunteerim.

In order to determine the most caring cities in America, WalletHub compared the 100 most populated cities using 39 relevant metrics, and calculating each city’s weighted average to determine its overall score and rank. Here, in ascending order, are the top 10 most caring American cities of 2021.
