Death is a difficult subject. Estate planning is often looked at as an unwelcome chore that can be neglected or done minimally to just get it done. Mr. H didn’t just cross his estate plan off his to-do list. He used it as a chance to speak to his family one last time. He showed what he valued and with whom he shared those values.

I used to try to get clients to think of their estate plan as a final love letter of sorts, but I have gotten away from that in recent years. Mr. H’s letter has inspired me to get back to using that description regularly.

I wish I could thank Mr. H directly, but this column will have to suffice. His example is going to help me help a lot of families in the future. It is another reminder that great planning is about far more than numbers and paperwork.
