Transitioning into civilian life is difficult for many veterans, who face challenges finding employment that recognizes their skills.

That has prompted Monster.com for the third year to look at those companies being proactive about hiring vets. The website turned to a panel of experts with military backgrounds who are dedicated to providing veterans with resources and empowering them in the workforce.

The panelists were asked to nominate 10 companies known for their hiring, recruitment and retention of veterans. The companies were contacted to provide data about their percentage of ex-military on staff and their development programs. They were also asked if military training was accepted and valued as work experience.

"Our annual list of Best Companies for Veterans celebrates companies that are serious about hiring the brave individuals who have served our country," says Jodi Hon, a senior vice president at Monster and general manager of enterprise business. "We're gratified to see a continued commitment to veteran hiring across numerous industries.”

These 10 companies, in ascending order, are top employers of veterans:

 

10. Boeing

This aerospace giant’s staff is 15 percent veterans. Boeing is proud to offer training and workforce transition programs for veterans. The company’s website offers military veterans a gateway to resources to build a career at Boeing. Boeing has created grant programs and invested millions to provide veterans with rehabilitation and transition services.

 

 

9. Union Pacific Railroad

In 2013, Union Pacific hired 95 disabled veterans and has donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. The company’s website has a “Military Skills Translator” that will match a veteran’s military service skills to current openings at the company. Union Pacific also offers military-to-civilian transitional resources in both personal and professional areas.

 

 

8. BAE Systems

The aerospace company profiles military veterans who work for the company on its website. The company is also a member of the Veteran Jobs Mission, a consortium of employers who employ veterans. In 2015, BAE hired 1,100 veterans and made Forbes magazine’s 2015 list of top 15 employers of veterans.

 

 

7. USAA

The financial services company proudly displays its commitment to veterans immediately as you land on its website. While the company offers financial advice for transitioning veterans, it also offers resources to all military families. Some of the resources include relocation information, continuing education lists and career fairs that include companies hiring veterans.

 

 

6. Schneider National

Schneider was named to GI Jobs' Top 100 Military Friendly Employers list for 10 years. The transportation company also has a gold rating on GI Jobs. Schneider National offers apprenticeship programs, benefits for deployed military and credit for military time served as professional experience.

 

 

5. Booz Allen Hamilton

One-third of this company’s employees have experience in the military. Founded by a veteran, Booz Allen Hamilton is recognized for supporting military families by forming partnerships with programs such as USO Metro, the Hiring Our Heroes’ Military Spouse Program and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.

 

 

4. Lockheed Martin

Lockheed has a "Military Connect" community that offers veterans assistance in transitioning into civilian life, help identifying professional goals and skills, help with resume writing, and help with coaching and mentorships.

 

 

3. U.S. Customs and Border Protection

About a third of all Customs and Border Protection employees have a military background. CBP emphasizes the military culture, citing core values in teamwork and integrity. CBP offers numerous benefits, including retirement, on-the-job training and an expedited hiring process for eligible military applicants. 

 

 

2. Intelligent Waves

This technology company supports the Warrior Ethos and USSOCOM Care Coalition Recovery Program as part of its community development initiatives. The company provides flexible working hours for wounded veterans and career resources including on-site recruiters, references and security clearance for eligible employees. 

 

 

1. ManTech International

Almost half of ManTech International’s workforce has a military background. The company is actively participating in transitioning veterans through active on-boarding efforts and invites for applicants with military experience to initiate contact for employment. ManTech is a member of the Veteran Jobs Mission and has made the GI Jobs list of military friendly companies since 2006.
