Candidates for the certified financial planner (CFP) designation will be able to take the required exam virtually for the July and November testing dates, the CFP Board announced.

The next exam will be offered July 6 through July 13, both in person and remotely. The following exam will be offered Nov. 2 through Nov. 9. It can be taken at a Prometric test center or through remote proctoring, the board said yesterday. The exam was offered with both options in March and 7% of the 2,686 candidates chose to take the test remotely. The March exam resulted in a 63% pass rate.

Registration for the July test is open through June 22. Registration for the November test opens July 15. Passing the exam is one of the requirements for earning the right to use the CFP designation.

The “CFP Board remains focused on the health and safety of candidates who wish to take the CFP exam,” said CFP CEO Kevin R. Keller. Candidates who choose to take the test remotely with a proctor need to have the required technology. The remote proctoring option allows candidates to take the exam from home or a location of their choice with security process and candidate check-in procedures comparable to those at test centers. Prometric live proctors monitor the individual’s test session by audio and video for the duration of the exam, the board said.

Candidates who want to take the exam in person at a test center will find most Prometric testing centers open, with some that may be operating at reduced capacity, the board said, adding that candidates are encouraged to register early for the best date and site availability.

The exam tests the ability to apply financial planning knowledge to real-life situations. It is offered three times a year. Additional details can be found at CFP.net/exam.
