SRI Comment - Spotlight - Parnassus Core Equity Fund (PRILX)

The Parnassus Core Equity Fund (PRILX) takes the lead in score over the SRI universe and offers a competitive alternative to the Ariel Fund Investor Class (ARGFX), which has been the recent leader in the SRI space this year.  US equity funds like PRILX and ARGFX have dominated the equity landscape for the later part of 2014, and they appear to be set up to do the same as we head into the 2015 session.  Classic Non-US funds like the Domini International Social Equity Fund Class A (DOMAX) and the DFA International Social Core Equity Portfolio Ins (DSCLX) are scoring below the 2 score line, a sign of negative strength and technical weakness.  If their scores improve, then you can get back into the intentional landscape again, but not before their relative strength improves.  Fixed income funds continue to show strong relative scores with many options trading above the 3 score line.  In the stop position is the Calvert Bond Portfolio Class A (CSIBX), sporting a score in the 3.70 range, where the average score for a quality fixed income funds averages at a score of 2.47.  Calvert has other important relative leaders including their tax-free funds.  Other fixed income names to investigate are the Parnassus Fixed Income Fund (PRFIX) and the Ave Maria Bond Fund (AVEFX).  All in all, 2014 has given the SRI investor excellent allocation choices while also offering stiff competition to fund options outside the SRI universe.

DWA Fund Score:    The DWA Fund score ranks the technical strength on a scale of 0 through 6 using an equation based on price trending and relative strength.  Funds with scores above 3 are considered by Dorsey Wright to be “investment grade”.   Funds with scores close to 6 are “market dominant."

DWA rRisk Score:     The DWA rRisk score measures the risk of the group on a relative basis. The calculation uses the 3 year Standard Deviation average of the group or fund divided by the Standard Deviation of the Cap Weighted S&P 500 Equity Index. Ratios higher than 1 demonstrate higher risk than the market benchmark and ratios less than 1 demonstrate lower risk than the market benchmark.
