Joanna Rotenberg has been named head of the $4.1 trillion Personal Investing division at Fidelity Investments, the firm announced today.

The appointment will be effective in early November. She succeeds Kathy Murphy, who announced her intention to step down from the position earlier this year.

Rotenberg most recently was group head of wealth management for Toronto-based BMO Financial Group. She also was a member of the BMO’s executive committee since joining the firm in 2010.

Fidelity’s Personal Investing division serves more than 30 million clients’ accounts, Fidelity said.

Rotenberg was appointed to her current role at BMO in 2016, with responsibility for businesses in North America, Europe and Asia, including direct brokerage, full service brokerage, private banking, insurance and asset management.

She was responsible for accelerating BMO Wealth’s digitization, including revamping the online investing platform for BMO’s direct channel, Fidelity said. Since 2020, net new client growth at BMO’s online brokerage has tripled, Fidelity said.

Rotenberg also was BMO’s head of strategy and chief marketing officer. As chief marketing officer, she led the firm’s social media marketing, accelerated its data-driven approach and modernized BMO’s brand, Fidelity said. She launched BMO for Women, a program providing capital and support for female clients and employees.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to join Fidelity’s customer-focused culture and embrace the company’s mission to make a meaningful impact on the lives of tens of millions of investors,” said Rotenberg.
