EP Wealth acquired independent registered investment advisor Donnelly Wealth Advisors (DWA), marking the third company it’s acquired in California and within 12 months.

Based in Torrance, Calif., EP Wealth is a fee-only registered investment advisor and financial planning firm with about $3.6 billion in assets under management. It provides services to individuals and businesses, and non-advisory assistance to independent fiduciary firms. The RIA started in 1999.

DWA’s founder Richard Donnelly and its financial planners Bradley Owen and Adam Werner will become partners at EP Wealth. Donnelly will be a regional director, Owen will be a senior vice president and wealth advisor, and Werner will be a vice president and wealth advisor.

DWA reported having $405.4 million in total regulatory assets under management and seven employees on its ADV filed March 15 with the SEC.

“DWA is one of the largest and fastest-growing fee-only RIAs in San Diego, and its multi-generational team will provide us with strong organic growth as we continue to enhance EP Wealth’s San Diego presence,” said Patrick Goshtigian, president and chief executive officer. EP Wealth says it will provide back-office support, including technology resources and compliance, to allow DWA advisors to be more engaged in client-facing matters.

The company acquired Millie Capital Management (MCM) in Walnut Creek, Calif., in February and Private Capital Management Associates (PCMA) in San Mateo, Calif., in June 2017. EP Wealth provides MCM with administrative support and assistance with contingency planning, according to a release.

PCMA’s founder, Nikki Chicotel, says her firm provides services to a lot of tech executives and engineers and found EP Wealth’s latest technology, its “detailed and transparent reporting,” and low fees appealing.

“That’s what scale gives you,” she says. Chicotel also mentioned that EP Wealth is “female friendly,” referring to the company’s Investing In Women corporate program that seeks to recruit more woman advisors. Lynn Ballou, co-founder of Ballou Plum Wealth Advisors and EP Wealth’s regional director, along with director of operations Sherryl Ray and marketing manager Austin King lead EP Wealth’s initiative.
