LendEDU has released its 2018 Student-Loan Complaint Report, with Navient Solutions LLC receiving the most filed against it.

Between January 1, 2018 and December 19, 2018, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) received a total of 8,340 student loan-specific complaints. Of that number, 64 percent consisted of federal student loan complaints, while the remaining 36 percent were filed against private financial institutions issuing the student loans, LendEDU reports.

The CFPB itself reported more student loan complaints from September 1, 2016 through August 31, 2017. During that year, the bureau said it handled 12,900 federal student loan complaints.

Navient is an intermediary between the borrower and the federal government, handling the billing, repayment process and any other service needed by the consumer or required by the Department of Education.

Last year, consumers did not approve of the way Navient did its job, based on the number of complaints filed against the company. The CFPB received 2,239 complaints filed against Navient in 2018, representing 42 percent of all complaints filed with the federal agency.

As of September 30, 2018, Navient had a total of 6,660,000 loan recipients, with 336.19 student loan complaints per one million loan recipients.

AES/PHEAA came in second, with 1,399 complaints filed against it, representing 26 percent of all those filed with the CFPB last year.

As of September 30, 2018, AES/PHEAA had 8,210,000 loan recipients, with 170.40 federal student loan complaints per one million loan recipients.

Nelnet, Inc. placed third, with 511 complaints filed against it last year.

As of September 30, 2018, Nelnet had 6,410,000 loan recipients, with 79.72 federal student loan complaints per one million loan recipients.

Great Lakes rounded out the field of four, with 225 complaints filed against it last year.

As of September 30, 2018, Great Lakes had 8,250,000 loan recipients, with 27.27 federal student loan complaints per one million loan recipients.
