After the lobbying effort, joined by organizations such as Greenpeace, Kimberly-Clark adopted a policy of using only "environmentally responsible wood" collected by energy efficient means (according to a 2008 company sustainability report). The company now abides by the Canadian Standards Association's national standard for sustainable forest management.
In another effort prompted by concerned investors, Calvert has engaged Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on labor and human rights issues such as employee health insurance, sexism and unions, while also pushing the company to be more sensitive to energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emission and waste. In July, Wal-Mart announced plans to develop a worldwide sustainable product index.
"One thing we are seeing with companies," Dalheim says, "If they are emerging as a leader in one area, then we can really push them to build up their leadership and ensure credibility in other areas."
