Bloomberg News has released its annual "100 Richest U.S. Zip Codes" survey and, this year, there is a bit of a surprise: A New York City neighborhood was among the top five.
The Big Apple has been missing from the top spots on the list in recent years, Bloomberg reported, but one New York City neighborhood worked its way up the chart as redevelopment of what used to be an industrial sector has attracted wealthy residents.
As for the rest of the list, things are a bit clustered. Half of the 100 counties on the richest zip codes list come from just eight U.S. counties, Bloomberg said.
"Seventeen states had at least one richest 100 zip code," Bloomberg reported. "California and New York each claimed 23, whereas Connecticut and Massachusetts independently added another nine." The full index of 300 richest zip codes are spread among 30 states and the District of Columbia, Bloomberg said.
Bloomberg looked at tax returns tied to 22,000 U.S. zip codes to compile the list.

10. Kenilworth, Ill. (60043)
Average annual income: $772,200.
This Chicago suburb has a population of only about 2,500 people. The median home value in the town is about $1.3 million, according to Zillow.
9. Boca Grande, Fla. (33921)
Average annual income: $773,500.
This is a small, isolated community on Gasparilla Island off Florida's southwest coast that's known for its unspoiled beaches and as a prime fishing location. The median home value is $1.7 million, according to Zillow.
8. Los Angeles (90067)
Average annual income: $826,400.
This is the zip code for Century City, a district on the west side of L.A. that is bisected by the Avenue of the Stars. It was was developed on a former lot owned by 20th Century Fox about 55 years ago. The median home price is about $1.1 million, according to Zillow.
7. Medina, Wash. (98039)
Average annual income: $848,600.
This neighborhood sits on a peninsula in Lake Washington, across from Seattle. It has a population of close to 3,000, and tech industry executives such as Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos are among its homeowners. The median home price is $2.8 million, according to Zillow.
6. Harrison, N.Y. (10577)
Average annual income: $857,300.
This is the zip code for Purchase, a hamlet within the town of Harrison that is known for its country clubs and colleges, and corporate areas that serve as headquarters to companies such as MasterCard and PepsiCo.
5. New York City (10007)
Average annual income: $879,000.
This is the zip code for the Tribeca section of the city. "Tribeca used to be a hub for industrial and manufacturing buildings," Bloomberg said. "In the 1980’s, developers converted the warehouses into residential-use which attracted more progressive and edgier individuals."
4. Palm Beach, Fla. (33480)
Average annual income: $1 million.
This area, with a population of about 10,500, sits on Florida's southeast coast. These days, it may be most known for being home to President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago golf resort. The median home price is $1.1 million, according to Zillow.
3. Palo Alto, Calif. (94301)
Average annual income: $1.27 million.
Home to portions of Stanford University, this area is an industrial hub of the high-tech sector. Companies headquartered here include Hewlett-Packard and Tesla. The median home price is $3.1 million, according to Zillow.
2. Atherton, Calif. (94027)
Average annual income: $1.28 million.
This town has a population of a little over 7,000. It sits between San Fransico and San Jose, but it is considered to be part of the S.F. metropolitan area. The median home value is $6.7 million, according to Zillow.
1. Miami Beach, Fla.
Average annual income: $2.2 million.
This is the zip code for Miami's 216-acre Fisher Island. One reason the island is so desirable among homebuyers is it’s exclusivity and privacy, according to Bloomberg. "Fisher Island isn’t open to the public and it’s not accessible by car. Only residents and their approved guests can access the island via a seven-minute ferry ride from Miami," Bloomberg said. The median home price here is $3.2 million, according to Zillow.
