The workers with the most satisfaction at work and job security are most often those with technical skills, a new survey says.

Engineers, managers, and health-care and technical professionals enjoy the lion’s share of most desirable jobs in the country, according to a recent ranking of the 50 Best Jobs in America by Glassdoor.

The report ranked jobs by Glassdoor’s Job Score, which combines the number of job openings, median base salary and overall job satisfaction rating to rank the overall attractiveness of a career.

Just missing the top 20 list were jobs like mobile developer, compliance manager, nurse manager, controls engineer, QA manager and communications manager.

The list, in ascending order, is as follows:

No. 20 – Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineers posted a score of 4.3 out of 5 and receive $76,000 in median base salary.

 

No. 19 – Finance Manager

Though they post a job satisfaction score of 3.6 out of 5. Finance managers also receive $116,000 in median base salary, enough to keep their overall score at 4.3 out of 5.

 

No. 18 – Supply Chain Manager

Supply chain managers score 4.3 out of 5 and enjoy median base salaries of $100,000.

 

No. 17 – Corporate Recruiter

Corporate recruiters only receive a median base salary of $60,000, but post a high 4.2 job satisfaction rating.

 

No. 16 – Software Engineer

There were 17,085 job openings for software engineers in Glassdoor’s report, more than for any other profession.

 

No. 15 – Nurse Practitioner

Nurse practitioners scored 4.3 out of 5, driven by high demand and high salaries. There were 15,634 job openings on Glassdoor at the time of the report, and nurse practitioners enjoy $100,000 median base salaries.

 

No. 14 – Electrical Engineer

With 3,643 job openings and a $78,000 median base salary, electrical engineers scored a 4.4.

 

No. 13 – Audit Manager

Audit managers scored 4.4 out of 5 and a job satisfaction rating of 3.8 out of 5.

 

No. 12 – Occupational Therapist

With 14,897 job openings, occupational therapists enjoy a $72,000 median base salary.

 

No. 11 – Marketing Manager

With a job score of 4.4 out of 5, marketing managers were much in demand at the time of Glassdoor’s report. There were 3,875 job openings for marketing managers.

 

No. 10 – Solutions Architect

Solutions architects enjoy $125,000 in median base salary and above average job satisfaction. At the time of Glassdoor’s analysis, there were 2,232 job openings for solutions architects.

 

No. 9 – UX Designer

UX designers scored a 4.4 and a job satisfaction rating of 4 out of 5.

 

No. 8 – Strategy Manager

Strategy managers get paid a median base salary of $130,000, which may be why they tend to be happy at work, with a job satisfaction rating of 4.3 out of 5.

 

No. 7 – Database Administrator

Database administrators rated somewhat low on job satisfaction, at 3.8 out of 5, but still scored a 4.5 thanks to high demand and a $93,000 median base salary.

 

No. 6 – HR Manager

With 4,339 job openings, HR managers are in demand, enough to rank them 6th on Glassdoor’s list despite an $85,000 median base salary.

 

No. 5 – Analytics Manager

With a median base salary of $112,000 and a 4.1 out of 5 job satisfaction rating, analytics managers posted a score of 4.6.

 

No. 4 – Tax Manager

Ranked fourth on Glassdoor’s list with a score of 4.7 out of 5, tax managers start out with a median salary of $110,000.

 

No. 3 – Data Engineer

There were 2,599 job openings for data engineers at the time of Glassdoor’s analysis. These professionals enjoy a $106,000 median base salary.

 

No. 2 – DevOps Engineer

With a score of 4.7, DevOps engineers ranked second on Glassdoor’s list. These engineers scored a 4.2 out of 5 for job satisfaction, and enjoy a $110,000 median base salary.

 

No. 1 – Data Scientist

Data scientists topped Glassdoor’s list with a score of 4.8 out of 5. Data scientists make a median base salary of $110,000. As of the Glassdoor report, there were 4,184 job openings for data scientists.
