”It’s not just taking care of your 96-year-old mom or dad,” LaBrecque said. “It's a bigger problem of how will society and the government take care of 33 percent of Americans collecting Social Security and Medicare who are not adding into the productivity of the retirement system.”

Lately, Kirchenbauer is putting in extra time networking to find professionals who specialize in gerontology or geriatrics.

“As advisors, we've got to expand our network of resources past estate planning attorneys and insurance agents to other professionals because it can be very powerful if the retired client is getting that kind of support,” Kirchenbauer said. “It also supports the financial plan you’ve created for the client.”
