New York-based American Portfolios Financial Services has continued its support of World T.E.A.M. Sports' 2018 Face of America bike ride, announcing it raised more than $100,000 dollars for the cause.

The 2018 Face of America bike ride was held April 27-29 to support adaptive and able-bodied athletes. More than 600 cyclists, including about 150 adaptive athletes consisting of active duty military personnel and veterans from the U.S., Canadian and European military, participated. Sixty-one American Portfolios staff members, affiliated financial advisors, business partners and friends of the firm also participated in the ride.

“It is the energy and enthusiasm of these 61 team members and volunteers that makes these events an integral part of AP’s culture,” David Rey, AP financial advisor and captain of Team American Portfolios, said in a statement. “Supporting those with disabilities and our injured veterans who have fought for our freedom is a true honor.”

World T.E.A.M Sports' mission has been to “change lives through sport” for the last 25 years. The non-profit organization created the cross-country ride in 2000 to honor military veterans who were injured or disable during their time of service.

This year, the ride took two days and covered more than 111.8 miles from Washington, D.C., to the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pa. Riders faced overcast skies, unseasonably cold temperatures and 20-mile per hour winds, making it one of the more challenging rides, according to news reports.

First-time Face of America rider for Team American Portfolios, Maria Zarb, vice president of business services, said in a statement, “It was one of the hardest—and most rewarding—experiences that I’ve ever had. It was inspiring to meet so many veterans and civilians, from all over the world, who helped to push us through every mile. The teams really care about each other and are extremely dedicated to the cause. It was a truly great experience that I will never forget.”

Team American Portfolios was recognized as the top fundraiser for the ride, the firm reported, raising more than $100,000 dollars in charitable donations. George Elkin ($10,325) and Edward Levine ($10,010), two of the firm’s affiliated advisors, ranked among the top five overall fundraisers.

Upcoming events include the World T.E.A.M. Sports Adventure Team Challenge, June 7-10, in Harris, N.Y., which brings together developmentally challenged teens and young adults from The Center for Discovery for a weekend of competitive team sporting events. The Coastal Team Challenge, a two-day, 16-mile kayak trip, will take place August 14-15 along the coast of Long Island, N.Y.

American Portfolios also announced its participation in the second annual Face Of America Liberty Ride in the fall to honor injured and disabled military veterans. The Liberty Ride will begin at the United States Military Academy at West Point along the Hudson River in New YOrk and end at One World Trade Center in Manhattan.

American Portfolios was founded in 2001 as a privately held, independent broker-dealer that now serves 816 independent financial advisors in 372 branch locations across the nation. The firm said it currently manages about $25 billion dollars in assets under management.
