One of the great nights of my life took place a few years ago when a group of us coming off a Silversea cruise were treated to an extensive private tour after the Hermitage had closed. Eight decades after the fact, our Russian guide was still fulminating over the loss of those great paintings – though not so much against Stalin. For her, though she couldn’t come up with his name, the real villain of the piece remained “the American finance minister!”
