“We are embroiled in a war” with the people who exploit the elderly over the phone and the internet and, in the case of trusted advisors and friends, in person, Marshall said.
“I encourage everyone to practice ‘upstandardship.’ If we are compliant and ignore exploitation, we are complicit in it,” he said. “We have a collective responsibility to help stop it.”
“If I had my grandmother’s case to do over again, I would go to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office immediately instead of trying to settle it in civil court and in private. Elder abuse is not a civil matter, it is a criminal matter,” he said.
