CFP professionals, 70,000 in all, are being asked to participate in a survey to help revamp the CFP certification exam and help the CFP Board of Standards Inc. shape education programs for the future, the board announced Thursday.

The CFP designees will be asked about what their clients need and what the latest trends are in the profession.

“This project serves as the definitive research on the financial planning profession, shedding light on the needs of clients and how CFP professionals help them achieve their financial goals,” says Kevin R. Keller, CFP Board CEO.  “All CFP professionals are encouraged to participate and contribute to this important undertaking, to advance and shape the future of the financial planning profession and CFP certification.”

The survey, which the board says is one of largest to be undertaken, will help differentiate the CFP certification from other personal financial planning designations, the board says. Results will be released in the fall.

CFP professionals will be asked what their clients need for such things as generating retirement income, estate planning and investments. Results will be used to update the CFP examination and will provide the framework for the courses for CFP board programs and continuing education (CE) requirements.

“This critical research will help to define the financial planning profession, ensuring the competency of future CFP professionals through up-to-date, relevant examination content and education requirements,” says Michele Warholic, CFP Board managing director for examination, education and human talent.
