Columbia Threadneedle Investments today rolled out two smart beta exchange-traded funds that are hitching their wagons to Russell 1000 indexes.

The Columbia Research Enhanced Core ETF (RECS) aims to outperform the Russell 1000 Index through its underlying index that employs a rules-based approach that rates each company in the Russell 1000 Index based on quality, value and catalyst factors. It selects those that are favorably rated (strong buy or buy) and removes the index’s bottom performers rated strong sell or sell. The underlying index can hold 325 to 400 constituents.

The fund has an expense ratio of 0.15%.

The Columbia Research Enhanced Value ETF (REVS) applies the same methodology but is based on the Russell 1000 Value Index. This fund’s underlying index can have 250 to 290 positions, and its expense ratio is 0.19%.

Underlying indexes for both funds were developed by Columbia Management Investment Advisers and are calculated and maintained by FTSE Russell. The index for the Enhanced Core fund is market cap-weighted and sector-neutral to the Russell 1000 Index, while the index for the Enhanced Value fund takes a similar approach to the Russell 1000 Value Index.
