The future of education programs that lead to the CFP designation will be discussed at the CFP Board’s 2018 Registered Programs conference Feb. 22 and 23 in Arlington, Va.

Academics and financial planning leaders from the CFP Board and financial firms will map out ways the groups can work together to improve the educational programs that lead to participants earning a CFP mark, said Mary Kay Svedberg, the CFP Board’s director of education.

“The thing that will be different this year will be the tone of the conference,” said Svedberg, who is in her first year as the education director. “The conference will focus on how CFP, financial firms and educators can work together to help each other.”

Dave Yeske, managing director of Yeske Buie, a financial planning firm in Vienna, Va., and San Francisco, will discuss the career paths that are open to CFP certificate holders.

At another session, Joanna Truitt, manager of continuing education and experience for the CFP Board, will delve into why financial planning internships are helpful.

Attendees also will have a chance to discuss best practices for advancing the academic programs, Svedberg said.

“We will share ideas and research that both sides can learn from,” she added. Academics from the university and college programs will learn what the firms need in new personnel, and firms can hone their recruiting practices based on the academic programs, she said.

“The entire program is designed around making connections and building partnerships” that will reflect the future of financial planning, Svedberg said. Anyone wanting to attend should contact the CFP Board.
