Though 87 percent of those surveyed were not familiar with the European regulation, 84 percent supported the regulation when informed of the details.

About two-thirds of U.S. companies think that the GDPR will require a new strategy of doing business with European companies, according to a report by Ovum, a global data research and analyst firm. The report also indicated that 85 percent of U.S. companies think the regulation will put them at a competitive disadvantage in European business dealings.

While the United States considers how to legislate protection laws for user data, the template of the GDPR may be beneficial, but may not be all that, according to an essay in The Economist. The need for transparency in data use regulation will be important for business and innovation across continents moving forward.
