But "there was no foolproof strategy for getting completely back on track while enduring such an unusually poor decade for equity investing as happened in the 2000s, especially right after retiring," the study notes.  Even a retiree who was able to reduce expenses substantially for a few years has a ways to go before restoring the odds of success that he or she had in 2000, the report says.

"The past decade really shows the importance of revisiting your retirement income strategy regularly and making adjustments if necessary," Fahlund says.
