Fraudulent emails saying phone numbers on the Do Not Call registry will soon expire have been sent in a scam to obtain consumer information, says the Federal Trade Commission.

The e-mail redirects the recipient to a fake Do Not Call website to re-register their phone number. Do not call registrations will never expire, according to Amy Hebert, an FTC consumer education specialist.

After adding a phone number to the Do Not Call Registry, it does not have to be re-registered for any reason. The number will only be removed if the number has been disconnected, issued to a new owner, or if you request to have it removed.

If you would like to block unwanted calls, you can add your number by visiting donotcall.gov and adding your number to the list or call 1-888-382-1222 from the number you would like to add to the list.

If unwanted calls continue even after your number is on the list, this may be a sign scammers have access to your number. Robocalls are calls received from an Internet based phone system. The calls are usually of recorded voices in lieu of a live caller. This has made it cheap and easy for scammers to make illegal sales calls, while also making it difficult for law enforcement to track them down.
