“We have worked with military families who don’t have enough savings to evacuate when they have been affected by natural disasters.  Financial assistance, grants, and in some cases loans are available to help in an emergency -- we help members apply the funding,” she said.

When service members receive assistance, the funds come from donations intended to help support service members, she added.

Financial advisors interested in extending their services within diverse populations or underserved communities have a great opportunity to do so, said Plot. Getting involved in organizations and events that work with the population you’re interested in is a great way to start, and the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is always looking for more volunteers, said Plot.
