And, heirs still have to think about state taxes. Some advisors in states that still have a state estate tax are mocking up Form 706 to help figure out how much is owed to the state. They use it to calculate the adjusted gross estate, so there is no need to assign a tax rate or exemption.
Twenty-one states have an estate tax.
