The Denver-based Financial Planning Association (FPA) announced today that Skip Schweiss will serve as the 2020 FPA president-elect.

Schweiss is president of the TD Ameritrade Trust Company, TD Ameritrade’s retirement plan solutions business for financial advisors, and managing director of advisor advocacy and industry affairs for TD Ameritrade Institutional.

”I’m thrilled and honored to assume this leadership role in the leading membership association for financial planning professionals,” said Schweiss in released comments. “Throughout my career, I’ve been able to serve the financial planning community and long ago came to admire the profession and the passion of its practitioners. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the profession, I look forward to working with, and on behalf of, my fellow FPA members to elevate the profession that transforms lives through the power of financial planning.”

Naming Schweiss as president represents something of a departure for the FPA in that he works for a leading service provider and he is not a practicing financial advisor. He is currently completing a three-year term on the FPA board of directors.  He also serves as president of NAPFA’s Consumer Education Foundation, sits on the Investment Advisor Association’s Government Affairs Committee and Legal and Regulatory Committee, and has established himself as a leading fiduciary advocate, as well as an expert on retirement plans and industry regulation.

Prior to joining TD Ameritrade, Schweiss held roles at Fiserv Investment Support Services, including president of Fiserv Trust Company, which was acquired by TD Ameritrade in February 2008.

The FPA also announced the election of four new members to its board of directors:

  • Robert van Beek – founder and director of Netherlands-based About Life & Finance
  • Susan Danzig, president of Moraga, Calif.-based Susan Danzig, LLC
  • Claudia Cypher Kane – a Roseville, Calif.-based financial advisor at Raymond James Financial Services
  • Carl A. Wayne – a senior advisor, charitable estate planning, at the American Heart Association in Los Angeles.

FPA NexGen also elected new leadership:

  • Joseph Stemmie of Riverstone Wealth Advisory Group in Midlothian, Va. will become 2020 NexGen president-elect
  • Michelle J. Wong, founder and advisor advocate at Nifty Advisor Support, will become the 2020 NexGen local leader coordinator
  • Diana Yanez, an associate planner at Philadelphia-based RTD Financial Advisors, will become the 2020 NexGen gathering coordinator
