That leaves only the S&P 500 and other major U.S. indices, which have continued to march higher, albeit at a slower rate. Gundlach suggested U.S. investors might want to start dollar-cost-averaging out of stocks before the next recession strikes.

"Ten years into the expansion, the S&P has crushed it and we're struggling to keep going," he said.
