Yet planning for a traditional—or early—retirement is still relevant for most clients nearing full retirement age, as 22 percent of Americans age 65 and older claim to experience at least one chronic health-care issue affecting their vision, hearing, mobility, cognition and ability to communication or care for themselves, the report said.

Fewer than 25 percent of respondents said that they had no differences in opinions with their spouses regarding retirement and their financial lives. The most frequently cited bone of contention between couples was saving now for the future (28 percent), followed by retirement goals and aspirations (27 percent).

BMO’s survey was conducted in June and July.
