Most new claims (27.2 percent) start at age 86 or older, another 25 percent are initiated between the ages of 81 and 85 and 17.5 percent were started 91 and older.

The AALTCI study also found that centenarians were among policyholders initiating claims. The oldest new claim was started by someone who was 106, while two were age 105, two were 104 and another two were 101.

On the other hand, the youngest new claimant was 25, the AALTCI said. It recommends that the ideal age to consider long-term care insurance is between 55 and 65.
