Retirees can’t enjoy their retirement without good health. That’s why International Living has compiled a list of the international retirement destinations offering the world’s best health-care services, at a cost much lower than in the U.S.
To compile the list, International Living assessed 25 countries in the healthcare category of their magazine's 2019 Global Retirement Index. The top six provide clean, excellent hospitals, highly trained doctors, and affordable care, according to International Living.
Here, in ascending order, are the six countries with the world’s best health care.
5. Costa Rica (tie)
Costa Rica is just as famous for its first-rate, affordable healthcare, as it is for its beaches, volcanoes and biodiversity. Expats have access to Costa Rica’s two health-care systems. Both are constantly being upgraded with new hospitals, new equipment and improvements in staff training. Many Costa Rican doctors speak English and received their training in Europe, Canada or the U.S., according to International Living.
5. Mexico (tie)
A favorite retirement destination of American expats. Many doctors and dentists in Mexico are trained in the U.S., and most large metropolises in the country offer a wide range of excellent hospitals that charge far less than their counterparts in the U.S., International Living says.
4. Ecuador
Ecuador offers retirees a life of adventure without the worry of finding U.S.-quality health care at an affordable price, thanks to a national law passed in 2016. The law requires all new residents to have some form of health care. It also prohibits any private insurer from denying coverage because of age or pre-existing conditions.
3. Thailand
From the modern skyline of Bangkok to the country’s beckoning beach resorts, Thailand has it all—including excellent, affordable health care. However, there is no national health-care system, so expats would be wise to carry health insurance.
2. France
France is the most popular tourist destination in the world, and for good reason. Eighty million visitors come to France to enjoy first-class shopping, a mild climate, and a culture steeped in history. Expats love it, too, but for an entirely different reason: France offers low-cost health insurance and superb quality of care.
1. Malaysia
Malaysia is known for its beaches, rainforests and colorful mix of cultures. Expats will also love the country’s world-class health care. Doctors here are accessible, speak English and many are trained in the U.S., U.K. or Australia. Malaysia is a top medical tourist destination.
