Long-time investment professional Jack Rivkin died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer at 77.

Rivkin, a native of Tulsa, Okla., spent nearly 50 years in investment research and management, most recently as chief executive officer and chief investment strategist for Altegris, a LaJolla, Calif.-based alternative asset manager.

Rivkin began his career after graduating from Harvard Business School as an analyst at Mitchell Hutchins, where he later became director of research. After Mitchell Hutchins was acquired by PaineWebber, he held a number of senior positions, including CFO of PaineWebber, CEO of PaineWebber Mitchell Hutchins, chairman of Mitchell Hutchins Asset Management and president of PaineWebber Capital.

He also served in a senior position at Neuberger Berman and was the subject of one of Harvard Business School’s most popular case studies, "Lehman Brothers: Rise of the Equity research Department” in 2006.
