Most respondents, 69 percent, had not shared their long-term-care plans with anyone else, including family members.

Northwestern Mutual also found significant lifestyle impacts for caregivers, most of whom reported having to choose between personal, family, partners, friends and their charges.

The Northwestern Mutual C.A.R.E. (Costs, Accountabilities, Realities, Expectations) study was conducted among 1,004 American adults aged 18 or older from the general population in November and December. The survey also included an oversample of 709 experienced caregivers, bringing the total caregivers in the survey to 987.
